Detox at home in Kyiv

A doctor comes to your address and helps the body cope with the effects of alcohol: examines the person, sets up an IV drip and monitors their condition. After opioids or a mix of substances, detox at home is often dangerous, and the doctor will recommend inpatient care instead.

AT A GLANCE

Detox at home at a glance

Detox at home is medical care that relieves intoxication and eases the person’s condition after prolonged drinking. A FAVOR doctor comes to your address in Kyiv, examines the person and sets up an IV drip with a formula they choose. At home, detox is done for alcohol intoxication when there are no contraindications. After opioids, sedatives or mixed use, inpatient detox is safer.

What detox is and what to expect from it

Detox treats the acute state after using alcohol or other substances: intoxication and withdrawal syndrome. It makes the person feel better and lowers the risk of complications, but it does not treat the addiction itself. WHO and UNODC stress that without further treatment after detox, people often return to using.

  1. 01

    A medical procedure, not a “cleanse”

    Activated charcoal, a sauna or over-the-counter vitamins are no substitute for a doctor’s exam. A doctor prescribes detox after an exam, and the IV formula depends on the person’s condition, illnesses and the medications they already take.

  2. 02

    Relieves the acute state

    The goal is to get through the hardest days without complications: rehydrate the body and ease shaking, insomnia, nausea and anxiety. After the exam, the doctor will tell you how many days this will take.

  3. 03

    Doesn’t replace addiction treatment

    Once the acute phase has passed, it’s worth talking about the next step: coding, rehabilitation or work with a psychologist. The person decides, and the doctor explains the options.

When detox can be done at home, and when it can’t

Detox at home is done after alcohol use, when the person is conscious, agrees to treatment and shows no signs of complications. After opioids, sedatives, stimulants or several substances at once, the doctor most often recommends inpatient care. The doctor makes the final decision after the exam.

Usually possible at home when

  • The person has used only alcohol
  • They are conscious, answer questions and agree to an IV drip
  • Stopping alcohol in the past did not cause seizures or hallucinations
  • Someone can stay with them for the next 24 hours

Safer as an inpatient when

  • The person has used opioids, including strong painkillers not as prescribed
  • They used several substances at once or took sleeping pills or sedatives with alcohol
  • After stimulants, the person has severe agitation, paranoia or hallucinations
  • Past withdrawal involved seizures, delirium or confusion
  • The person has serious heart, liver or kidney disease or diabetes, or is pregnant

Why detox after opioids usually can’t be done at home

Opioids suppress breathing. Combined with alcohol, sleeping pills or sedatives, the risk is higher, and at home a doctor can’t monitor breathing around the clock. Opioid withdrawal usually lasts several days and requires monitoring and further treatment. Also, after detox the body loses its tolerance, so going back to the usual dose can end in overdose. That’s why for opioid addiction we offer inpatient detox.

Call 103

Signs that mean you should call 103 right away

Overdose and severe poisoning are emergencies. They need an ambulance, not an addiction doctor’s visit. If you notice anything on this list, call 103.

  • the person is unconscious or doesn’t respond to voice or touch;
  • very small pupils;
  • breathing is slow, shallow, raspy or has pauses;
  • bluish lips or nails, cold pale skin;
  • seizures;
  • severe agitation, delirium, the person doesn’t recognize family;
  • chest pain;
  • the person talks about suicide.

While you wait for the ambulance, don’t leave the person alone. If they are breathing but unconscious, lay them on their side. Tell the 103 dispatcher exactly what they took.

How detox at home works

Detox at home consists of a call, an exam, an IV drip and monitoring over the next few days. Sometimes one visit is enough; sometimes the doctor suggests follow-ups. How many visits are needed depends on how long the person has been using and how they feel.

  1. 01

    Call

    The staff member on duty asks what the person took, how much and for how long, what illnesses they have and what medications they take. If it’s already clear from the call that home is unsafe, you’ll be offered inpatient care right away.

  2. 02

    IV drip

    The doctor chooses the formula after the exam. We don’t list drug names on the website.

  3. 03

    The next few days

    The doctor explains to the family how to keep an eye on the person and which signs mean they should call again. If the condition doesn’t improve, the doctor suggests a follow-up visit or admission.

What families can do after detox

After detox the person usually feels better, but the addiction doesn’t go away. For the first few days, family members should stay close, keep an eye on how the person is doing, and not rush conversations about the future. It’s better to discuss further treatment once the person has rested.

  • Don’t give alcohol “to help them recover,” or any medicine from the home cabinet without asking a doctor.
  • Let the person sleep and eat, and offer water.
  • Watch their breathing and consciousness, especially at night.
  • If the person has used opioids, know the signs of overdose and call 103 if you notice them.
  • Write down how their condition changes: it will help the doctor at a follow-up visit.
  • Talk calmly about the next step, without reproach: coding, rehabilitation or a psychologist’s consultation.

Families need support too. At FAVOR, psychologists counsel families of people with addiction; you can ask about this during the call.

Frequently asked questions about detox at home

  • How much does detox at home cost?

    A visit with an exam and an IV drip costs from 2,900 UAH; an extended IV drip after prolonged drinking costs from 4,500 UAH. A follow-up visit costs from 2,200 UAH. The doctor quotes the exact amount after the exam and before the procedure begins.

  • Can drug detox be done at home?

    After opioids, sedatives or several substances at once, it’s usually dangerous at home: breathing may be suppressed, and withdrawal lasts several days and requires monitoring. In such cases we offer inpatient detox. Whether there are exceptions is decided by the doctor after the exam.

  • How long does alcohol detox take?

    Getting through the acute phase usually takes several days, and a follow-up visit may be needed during that time. The doctor will be more precise after the exam, as it depends on how many days the person was drinking and what illnesses they have.

  • Can I detox on my own, without a doctor?

    We don’t recommend it. Stopping alcohol abruptly after a long period of drinking can cause seizures or delirium, and medicine from the home cabinet combined with alcohol suppresses breathing. If you’re not sure whether a doctor is needed, call us: the call is free.

  • How is detox different from alcohol withdrawal treatment?

    Alcohol withdrawal treatment is detox specifically after several days of drinking. Detox is a broader term: it can follow alcohol, drugs or medication. At home we do it after alcohol; after other substances, most often as an inpatient.

  • What happens after detox?

    The person feels better physically, but cravings for alcohol or drugs may remain. So the doctor explains what treatment is possible next: coding, rehabilitation, psychologist consultations. The person makes the choice.

  • What if the person starts using again after detox?

    It happens, and it doesn’t mean helping is pointless. Call us and tell us what happened. If the person used opioids, remember: after a break, the usual dose can become dangerous. If you see signs of overdose, call 103.
