An IV drip at home in brief
An IV drip at home is an intravenous infusion of solutions that a FAVOR doctor gives at your address in Kyiv after an examination. Most often it is given after several days of drinking, when the person feels unwell and cannot recover on their own. The doctor chooses the solutions based on the person’s condition, age, illnesses, and the medications they already take.
- At the patient’s home, Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast
- Chosen by the doctor after an examination
- from 2,900 UAH
An IV drip for a hangover vs. after a binge: what’s the difference
An IV drip for a hangover and an IV drip after a drinking binge are different situations. After a single evening, people usually get better on their own, and a drip is not always needed. After several days of drinking, withdrawal syndrome can develop, and then a doctor’s examination matters more. The doctor decides whether to give a drip after an examination.
An IV drip at home is appropriate when
- The person has been drinking for several days in a row and cannot stop or recover
- They feel nauseous, cannot keep water down, cannot sleep, and their hands shake
- They are conscious and agree to the procedure
- Someone can stay with them after the drip
The doctor will most likely suggest something else when
- It’s a hangover after one evening with no other complaints: rest and water are often enough
- They have had seizures or hallucinations during alcohol withdrawal before: inpatient care is safer
- Besides alcohol, the person has used drugs, sleeping pills, or sedatives
- They have serious heart, liver, or kidney disease, or diabetes
Contraindications to an IV drip at home
The doctor checks for contraindications before the procedure. If there are any, the drip is not given at home: the doctor explains why and suggests another option, for example inpatient treatment.
When to call 103 right away
An IV drip at home is a planned procedure. If the person’s life is at risk, they need an ambulance. If you notice anything on this list, call 103 first.
- the person is unconscious or cannot be woken up;
- breathing is slow, raspy, or has pauses;
- seizures;
- the person does not recognize family members, or sees or hears things that are not there;
- chest pain or pressure;
- vomiting blood or dark material that looks like coffee grounds;
- the person has hit their head.
While the ambulance is on its way, do not leave the person alone. If they are lying down and vomiting, turn them on their side.
What the contents of an IV drip depend on
The doctor decides what goes into the drip after an examination, so there is no single “alcohol IV drip” for everyone. The choice and amount of solutions depend on the person’s condition, illnesses, medications, and what exactly they have been using. We don’t list drug names on the website: only a doctor prescribes them.
-
How much and how long the person drank
The body needs different help after one evening than after a week of drinking. So the doctor first asks how many days it lasted, when the last drink was, and what exactly the person drank.
-
How they feel right now
The doctor assesses consciousness, behavior, nausea, tremor, sleep, and general condition.
-
Chronic illnesses
Heart, liver, or kidney disease and diabetes change which solutions can be given and in what amounts. Mention them even if the person has no complaints right now.
-
Medications and other substances
Some medications do not combine well with drugs used in IV drips. Show the doctor everything the person takes, and say honestly whether they have used anything besides alcohol.
How an IV drip at home works
An IV drip at home has four stages: examination, preparation, the procedure itself, and advice afterwards. The person lies in their own bed or on the couch the whole time. How long the visit takes depends on the prescribed contents.
-
Examination
The doctor talks to the person and their family, assesses their condition, and checks for contraindications. Only then do they decide whether to give a drip and quote the price.
-
Preparation
The person is settled comfortably, with a chair or hanger for the IV line placed nearby. The doctor inserts a catheter into a vein in the arm.
-
Procedure
The solutions drip in slowly. If the person feels worse, say so right away.
-
After the drip
The doctor removes the catheter and explains what the person can eat and drink, what to expect overnight, and which signs mean you should call. If one drip is not enough, they suggest a repeat visit or inpatient care.
How much an IV drip at home costs

Can I get an IV drip anonymously?
Yes, contacting FAVOR is confidential. We don’t share data from website requests with third parties.
- You can call on someone else’s behalf, without giving their name.
- How form data is processed: see the Privacy policy.
How to prepare for an IV drip and what to do afterwards
You don’t need to do anything special before an IV drip at home. It’s enough that the person has somewhere to lie down and the doctor can see their medications and medical records. After the procedure, what matters most is rest, water, and no alcohol at all.
- Prepare a place where the person can lie down, with enough light for the doctor to work.
- Gather the medications the person takes and any hospital discharge papers.
- Write down how many days the drinking lasted and when the last drink was.
- Before the doctor arrives, do not give alcohol or medications from the home medicine cabinet.
- After the drip, let the person sleep and offer water in small sips.
- Do not leave them alone the first night. If their condition gets worse, call the doctor or 103.
An IV drip relieves the acute state but does not treat addiction. If binges keep happening, you can talk to the doctor about further treatment once the person feels better.
Frequently asked questions about an IV drip at home
-
How much does an IV drip for alcohol at home cost?
From 2,900 UAH, including the home visit and examination. An extended drip after several days of drinking costs from 4,500 UAH, and a repeat drip from 2,200 UAH. The price depends on the contents the doctor prescribes, and they quote it before the procedure begins.
-
What goes into a hangover IV drip?
There is no standard set: the doctor chooses the solutions after an examination, taking into account the person’s condition, illnesses, and medications. We don’t list drug names because only a doctor can prescribe them. If you want to know what exactly is being given, ask the doctor on site.
-
Is an IV drip needed if it’s just a hangover?
Not always. After one evening, people often feel better on their own within a day. A drip makes sense when the person has been drinking for several days, cannot keep water down because of nausea, or has other complaints. Describe the situation by phone, and we’ll tell you whether it is worth calling a doctor.
-
How long does an IV drip take?
The duration depends on the contents the doctor prescribes.
-
Can an IV drip be given if the person is still drunk?
The doctor decides this after an examination. When you call, say when the person last drank and how much.
-
Can we give the IV drip ourselves if someone in the family is a medic?
We advise against it. The contents and amount of solutions depend on the state of the heart, liver, and kidneys, and on what the person has used. Without an examination, it is easy to make a mistake. If in doubt, call us: phone consultations are free.
-
Will one IV drip be enough to end a binge?
Sometimes one is enough; sometimes repeat visits or inpatient care are needed. We won’t make promises in advance: the doctor will tell you after an examination. Learn more about treating a binge at home on the Alcohol withdrawal treatment at home page.
-
What should I do if the person feels worse after the drip?
Call the doctor who gave the drip or the clinic’s 24/7 number. If the person has lost consciousness, has seizures, or their breathing has become slow, call 103.
